Dilute phase conveying occurs at or above the saltation velocity of the material. Dense-phase conveying occurs below the saltation velocity. There are various regimes of dense phase conveying. Bed flow, slug flow, solid flow, etc. These regimes are determined by the characteristics of the material and the conveying velocity.

You can read more about dense phase pneumatic conveying elsewhere on the Mactenn website.
